Preface:

There has been a recent resurgence of interest in 'Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder' among both parents and physicians. The reason is not that the disorder is occurring more frequently than in the past, but the fact is that, previously it remained undiagnosed. Even today, despite recent advances in the knowledge of this disorder, many children are still missed or mis-diagnosed.
It is surprising that many children with this disorder are considered distractible or disruptive and are described as being 'naughty'. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder must be recognized and treated properly. Poorly managed condition can be very disturbing to the parents and can lead to serious long-term problems in the child such as low achievement, conduct and emotional problems, and social withdrawal.
Unless the profundity of the deficit is adequately understood and fully accepted, the behaviour of the child cannot be modified. This booklet aims to offer some fundamental insight and understanding into some of the difficulties faced by these children and those living and working with them, and also the impact these can have in future.
An attempt is also made to present an approach to the diagnosis and assessment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and principles of the management. The main focus of the intervention is to adapt to the individual needs of the child and improvement in the quality of life for all concerned.
Dr. Inder deserves special acknowledgement for taking pains for the proof reading of the manuscript.
