Vitamin B5 – the insider tip for mental fitness and energy
We all want to be mentally fit and productive at all ages yet the daily flood of information strains our attention. We find it harder to concentrate and remember things. Vitamin B5 can be a welcome help for our grey matter. It supports normal mental performance* and ensures that the body has enough energy to unfold its normal potential.
As a precursor to coenzyme A (CoA), this water-soluble vitamin plays a key role in numerous body functions. Hence the name pantothenic acid from the Greek “pantothen”, meaning “everywhere”. Vitamin B5 ignites cellular energy production, supporting transmission between the nerve cells so the signals arrive at the right place.
Pantothenic acid is brain food
As a precursor to coenzyme A (CoA,) vitamin B5 – also called pantothenic acid – plays a role in the production of important neurotransmitters that control communication between nerve cells. But it is also decisive for energy production from our food.
Since it supports energy metabolism and is involved in the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, vitamin B5 is often called “brain food”. In fact our brain uses 20 % of our total daily energy although it comprises only 2 % of our body weight. And without acetylcholine the communication between the brain and other parts of the body cannot function properly.
Why should vitamin B5 be part of our daily diet?
Pantothenic acid is a water-soluble vitamin. It cannot be stored in the body so it has to be absorbed daily via food or nutritional supplements. Vitamin B5 makes a decisive contribution to the metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. It also helps us to convert food into energy and helps to reduce tiredness and exhaustion.
Which foods contain vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid)?
Vitamin B5 is contained in many foods, such as meat, eggs, wholewheat products, vegetables and pulses. About 300 grams of mushrooms meets our daily requirement. The body can also produce pantothenic acid in the gut but only in small amounts.
Yet despite its wide availability in our food, it can sometimes be difficult to obtain sufficient vitamin B from the food we eat due to the quality of the food or raised individual requirements. Cooking can also degrade it. Therefore supplementation may be sensible.
