A jewel
Bruce Lipton, the world-renowned cell biologist, says of this book: "It used to be thought that our health and behaviour were the domain of genes, but recently it has emerged that our health and behaviour are governed by our perceptions of the environment and our beliefs. Gabor Maté, MD, skilfully combines recent advances in biomedicine with the personal insights of his patients to provide empowering insights into how deeply developmental experiences shape our health, behaviour, attitudes and relationships. A must-read for health professionals and laypeople who want to gain an awareness of how the mind controls health." I can only agree with that! Gabor Maté, influenced by Prof Dr Ivan Illich among others, is a wonderful doctor. read more ...

Very informative
Of course I have already read all the books by Dahlke, Tepperwein, ... but I still gained many enlightening insights from this book. Very nice writing style, easy to read. Anyone who wants to look into the background of psychosomatics is well advised to read this book. read more ...

Definitely worth reading!
The experienced author knows how to shed new light on the prevailing work of conventional medicine. It can repair, amputate and in many cases it can do this quite successfully. It can treat successfully in the long term - but the question is always for whom it is successful. In all too many cases, it cannot heal and make the patient healthy in the long term.
However skilful the doctor may be, he usually only pokes around in the pathology and doesn't think about the psychological causes that often cause the illness.

Stress is normal today
My job, coupled with my partnership and sporting activities, was never possible without stressful situations. Now that I am retired, I can organise my life more clearly and much more pleasantly. This raises the question of whether Dr Gabor Maté's findings can somehow be applied with the focus on success and goal achievement. I fear that the stop button will only be pressed when the acute situation arises and many things will no longer be as they were before. The fates described in the book are easy to understand. I read a chapter from time to time and am struck by the fact that childhood experiences have a formative influence on health as an adult. I recommend the book to everyone. read more ...

Far too "cancer-heavy"
Every second word in this book is "cancer". In times of cronic fatique syndrome and other serious illnesses, some people, like me, certainly expect something different from this book description. read more ...

Very good as an introduction to the topic
Dr Maté uses people and their fates as examples to describe what happens when there is a lack of self-care. Having studied homeopathy for years, I can say that I have hardly ever read better descriptions of carcinosinic and syphilitic conditions.
However, the treatment of these illnesses plays no role in the book, not least because the patients in question had long since reached the terminal stage and the only question was why they (had to) go through this particular illness.
The body says no where the soul is silent!
A really valuable book for all those who are prepared to take the connection between body, mind and soul seriously.

Impressive descriptions that make you think
The book is very easy to read and it shows, both by looking at individual patient stories and the existing studies, that the influence of emotional processes in the development of diseases must be taken into account. In this way, fast-track medicine is reduced to absurdity - encouraging and thought-provoking for me. read more ...

Comprehensive article on psychosomatic correlations in serious chronic illnesses. Easy to understand for laypeople, but also very readable for medical professionals! A good mixture of experience reports and relatively up-to-date scientific background. read more ...

One of the best books I have ever read
I now have all of Gabor Maté's books. I have learnt a lot from his books. My point of view, for example about ADHD and addictions
has totally changed. I will continue to read all the books he publishes with great interest.

Does me no good
The book is too lengthy with its endless case studies. And if ban has already gone through all the trauma and "misbehaviour", then you can't really wait for it to "get you". A very depressing prospect. The approaches to solving the problem are too small for me and are not new. I expected much more. read more ...
