At the Prasanta Banerji Homeopathic Research Foundation (PBHRF), Prasanta Banerji and his colleagues have treated more than 30,000 cancer patients since 1990 with homeopathy alone. Reports show that tumors in almost 20% of the cases completely regressed, and stabilzed in another 20% - all without chemotherapy or radiation. Patients with tumors that had stabilized, were followed between two and ten years to monitor the improvement (Banerji, 2008). These reports suggest that in 40% of cases, homeopathic remedies alone are reversing or stabilizing the cancer. This is a success rate that matches the best results for conventional medicine, and without the adverse and sometimes debilitating effects of chemotherapy and radiation.

The Banerji Protocols, as the homeopathic therapy developed at PBHRF is known, has been independently tested under laboratory conditions. Two of the remedies from the Protcols, Carcinosin and Phytolacca, were found to be as effective against breast cancer cells as Taxol, the chemotherapy drug (International Journal of Oncology, 2010; 36: 395–403).

The Protocols make use of high-technology screening equipment and the use of multiple remedies. These practices are contrary to Classical Homeopathy, which attempts to find the one remedy that fits a patient's complete set of physical and psychological symptoms.

In 1995, Dr Prasanta Banerji and his son, Dr Pratip Banerji, presented a study at the 5th International Conference of Anti-cancer Research of 16 cases of brain tumour that had regressed, using only homeopathic remedies. It was at this conference that the work at the Banerji Foundation first came to the attention of the western medical world. At the time, they had been testing homeopathic remedies on cancer patients since 1992 at their Foundation. Today, they treat around 120 cancer patients every day.

A trial was set up to test two homeopathic remedies after Dr Sen Pathak, professor of cell biology and genetics at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) in Houston, approached the Banerjis. In the trial, Ruta 6 and Calcarea Phosphorica 3X, were tested on 15 patients with brain tumours. Six of the seven patients with gliomas —a type of brain cancer— had complete regression. Scientists noted that the remedies induced death-signalling pathways in the cancer cells in a companion in-vitro laboratory study (International Journal of Oncology, 2003; 23: 975–82).

The results were striking. Gliomas are considered to be incurable: each year in the U.S. alone, 10,000 people are diagnosed with malignant gliomas and only about half live another year, and just a quarter are alive two years later (The Washington Post, 20 May 2008). The researchers at MDACC were so impressed by the results, they started offering homeopathic remedies as part of their cancer treatment.

The National Cancer Institute, a US government agency, independently evaluated the Benerji Protocols in 1999 on 10 patients with various types of cancer. In four cases of oesophageal and lung cancer, researches from the NCI confirmed that the patients had partial responses to the homeopathic remedies, none of whom, had received any previous conventional cancer treatments.

The NCI made an historic decision when it concluded there was sufficient evidence of efficacy to support further research into the Banerji Protocols: this was the first time any official health institute in the US had worked with an alternative therapy for cancer treatment (Oncology Report, 2008; 20: 69-74).

To understand exactly how the homeopathic remedies work on cancer cells, eight scientists from MDACC tested four remedies — Carcinosin 30 C, Conium maculatum 3 C, Phytolacca decandra 200 C and Thuja occidentalis 30 C — on two cell lines of human breast-cancer. Approximately five-thousand cells were exposed to the remedies and to a placebo for periods of between one and four days. The placebo consisted of the solvent without the active ingredients of the remedies. The experiment was repeated three times.

Carcinosin and Phytolacca achieved up to an 80% response, meaning they caused apoptosis, or cell death. The placebo solvent by comparison, achieved only a 30% response. The results suggest that the effect the remedies had on the cancer cells was more than twice that of the placebo. The effect was shown to be strongest with higher dilutions — which, in the contrary world of homeopathic medicine, means more powerful — and for longer periods of exposure.

The remedies triggered what is known as an ‘apoptotic cascade’ which interfered with the cancer cells’ normal growth cycle. Researches found, however, the surrounding healthy cells were uneffected. In other words, the remedies targeted only the cancer cells, as compared to chemotherapy drugs which attack all growing cells indescriminantly. Furthermore, the researchers said that the effects of Carcinosin and Phytolacca were as powerful as Taxol (paclitaxel), the most commonly prescribed chemotherapy drug for breast cancer (International Journal of Oncology, 2010; 36: 395–403).

Despite the good results of Carcinosin and Phytolacca in the laboratory, many patients at PBHRF are taking the Ruta 6 remedy, and, according to one survey of 127 American patients with brain tumors – half of whom were at grade IV (the end-stage before death), with extraordinary results.

According to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, the tumours had completely disappeared in 18 of the 127 patients who were taking only Ruta and no conventional treatment. An additional nine patients had significant tumour regression. In about half of the patients scanned, the tumours were stable, but had grown in 27 patients. Overall, the survey showed about 79% of the brain-tumour patients experienced either great or some benefit from Ruta.

In an earlier study of patients at the Foundation who were taking Ruta alongside conventional chemotherapy for brain tumours, 72% experienced some or great benefit from Ruta and chemotherapy combined. One-hundred forty-eight patients with malignant gliomas and 144 with meningiamas treated at the Foundation between 1996 and 2001 were followed in a separate study. Ninety-one of these patients were treated solely with Ruta and Calc phos. They had an average survival time of 92 months. Eleven of the patients were treated with conventional therapy and used homeopathy as a supplement. These patients survived an average of 20 months. Overall results for the homeopathy-only patients were: 7% were completely cured, 60% had improvement, 22% were stable with the cancer neither improving nor worsening and 11% had their cancer worsen or they died.
